A CHARGE TO MEMBERS OF THE CENTRAL WORKING COMMITTEE OF THE RIVERS IJAW FOUNDATION BY THE CONVENER, CHIEF BEKINBO SOBEREKON ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 2017.
Since 1999, the politics of Rivers State has lost all forms of decency and order as vandalism, crookedness, deceit, oppression and ingratitude took over after Dr. Peter Odili came to power in the state. He dismantled anything called order and planted discord that has grown till date.
The group that suffers most from this dislocation are the Rivers Ijaw people who incidentally installed Odili as governor. Therefore, if as Rivers Ijaw people we decide to do nothing about the sordid situation, our children and our children’s children would ask us lots of embarrassing questions, as indeed they have already started to ask. Rivers Ijaw must therefore wake up and fight for political power.
We must remember that at the time Dr. Odili was given power, Rivers Ijaw was strong enough to dictate where power goes. Our leaders who brought him to power were either too broadminded, careless, selfish or lacked understanding of the hidden plans of the enemy.
Rivers Ijaw that are the worst victims of the current situation, must do everything possible to liberate its people because God only helps those who help themselves. Yes, we are much more disadvantaged today but even the nation of South Africa, before our very eyes, freed itself from apartheid because of self-determination.
It is sad that some Rivers Ijaw persons are still selfish or blind to the factors that brought us to this sorry pass as they frantically support the usurpers and sell their birthright for a pot of porridge only to be denied even of the crumbs under the table.
There is the urgent need for total commitment on the part of all true Rivers Ijaw persons to work ourselves back to political power. We must drink this, eat it and dream it at all times then God will see us through.
We must remember at all times that there are booboo traps set for us to fail but we must be extra committed and careful in walking through this path because the oppressors are very happy with our situation.
I therefore enjoin us to come up with practical plans to free ourselves. We must first realize that we are in a big trouble and all of us in one accord must find a way forward to get out of this maze. The actualization of a governor of River Ijaw extraction in 2019 after 20 years of Upland rule must be our driving force.
But Governor Wike is already insinuating that after him there would be another Ikwerre Governor that will make up a 32-year Ikwerre rule. We must not take this lightly; we must put in all it takes to take power back from them. But we must not keep power to the exclusion of our Ogoni brothers and other ethnic nationalities in Rivers State. Rivers Ijaw must hand over power after eight years.
We can see that development has been brazenly denied Rivers Ijaw land since the reign of Odili till today. History from different parts of the world shows that only strong self-determination can reverse such a bad situation and our case cannot be different. Our problems appear insurmountable but with heightened determination, we shall be shocked how simple it could be. Wake up everybody, wake up! We must work fervently and leave the rest to God.
All Rivers Ijaw people must come together for once and vote that Rivers Ijaw candidate in 2019 in whichever political party that candidate emerges from. We are first and foremost Rivers Ijaw before we are members of political parties and we shall remain Ijaw while the parties come and go. Let’s fight for power in 2019 and all other things shall be added.
We are surely more than nine Local Governments; we are in at least 11 LGAs. No matter how our detractors have padded the voters’ register, those are mere figures and not proper head count. We shall emerge victorious if we stick together and vote en bloc.
I call on the entire Rivers Ijaw to think deeply. God bless us all.
