The governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party, ADP in the 2019 Rivers State governorship election, Mr. Victor Fingesi had justified his party’s challenge of the victory of Gov. Nyesom Wike at the Rivers State Election Tribunal, saying that:
“Every new election in the state is getting worse than the previous one and we need to bring sanity into the electoral process in Rivers State. Elections must be conducted in a free and fair manner and that is the only way there can be fairness and equity; this is the only way to reduce rancor in the system.
“The ADP is at the election Tribunal because we want to help improve the electoral process in Rivers state. Without going to the tribunal, and exposing the flaws in the 2019 elections, we would not be rendering good services to Rivers State because Rivers people deserve better than what we had in the last elections”.
On the spate of insecurity in the state, the ADP governorship candidate, Victor Fingesi called for a state of emergency to be declared on security in Rivers State. He was reacting to the recent threat by Governor Nyesom Wike to dethrone any traditional ruler whose domain continues to record high crime rate and insecurity. Mr. Fingesi faulted the governor’s approach, saying that:
“We have proposed in the past that a conference on security should be set up where critical stakeholder would come together to find the way forward and push Rivers State out of the prevailing high rate of insecurity. The government needs to look for experts, who are readily available, that would sit with critical stakeholder and fashion out a way out of the insecurity in Rivers State”.
It would be recalled that a week or so to the March 9, 2019 governorship election, Mr. Victor Fingesi had predicted that the election would be peaceful. According to the Rivers State ADP governorship candidate:
“The reason why it will be peaceful is because there will not be much to fight for; the two big parties that we know, will not be at war with one another because for now, one of them is not on the ballot”.
However, events during and after the 2019 governorship election, proved Mr. Fingesi wrong because the election was far from peaceful and fair, a situation the ADP candidate is at the election tribunal to prove.
